Goldilocks Trail · Part Two

The eastern descent around Baby Bear, part of the 9.5 km lodge-to-lodge Goldilocks hike.

Island Lake Lodge · The Lizard Range

The eastern portion of Goldilocks descends switchbacks between Baby Bear and Mama Bear to rejoin the top of Spineback. For the complete trip, hike from the lodge up Spineback, circle Baby Bear, then retrace Spineback back to the lodge. The figures below include that entire outing.

  • Route type: Out-and-back with a loop
  • Distance: 9.5 km lodge-to-lodge
  • Estimated time: 4.5–5.5 hours for the full trip
  • Elevation gain: 740 m for the full trip

The printed guide gives the combined distance and elevation gain. The time estimate adds the published 3–4 hours for Spineback and 1.5 hours for the upper loop. Allow extra time for breaks and conditions.

See the Goldilocks Loop route in 3D.

The eastern half of the Goldilocks loop drops away from Baby Bear on switchbacks between Baby Bear and Mama Bear, rejoining the top of the Spineback Trail for the return to the lodge. Hiked as part of the full outing it is nine and a half kilometres and 740 metres of gain from the lodge and back, a four and a half to five and a half hour day. The blue dots mark the way down; the scrambling starts where the trail ends, so treat that as your turn-around signal.
