Cat Skiing & the mountain
What is cat skiing?
Cat Skiing is guided backcountry skiing or snowboarding with a snowcat providing the ride uphill. At Island Lake, your group travels in a heated passenger cabin, skis with professional guides, and returns to the cat for the next climb.
Where is Island Lake Cat Skiing?
Island Lake Cat Skiing is near Fernie, British Columbia, in the Lizard Range of the Canadian Rockies. The lodges sit in the Cedar Valley above Mount Fernie Provincial Park.
Is Island Lake a private ski resort?
Island Lake operates its cat skiing program on privately owned mountain land, with 5,000 skiable acres and space for 36 winter skiers and snowboarders at a time. Full ski-program buyouts can be arranged through the concierge. Public summer trail access is a separate arrangement.
How is cat skiing different from lift-served skiing?
A snowcat carries a small guided group uphill instead of a chairlift. The ride is part of the experience: a chance to warm up, have lunch and spend time with your friends. Guides select terrain throughout the day rather than guests following a lift network independently.
How is cat skiing different from heli-skiing or ski touring?
Cat Skiing uses a tracked snowcat for the uphill journey. Heli-skiing uses a helicopter, while ski touring generally involves climbing on skis under your own power. Island Lake’s regular winter guest program is guided cat skiing.
What kind of skiing is there in the Canadian Rockies at Island Lake?
Alpine bowls, ridgelines, and gladed tree skiing. Guides choose runs for your group, visibility, and snow stability; no particular run or snow condition is guaranteed.
How much skiable terrain does Island Lake have?
Island Lake has 5,000 skiable acres—nearly twice Jackson Hole’s 2,500 in-bounds acres. Daily accessible terrain depends on weather and snow stability.
How many people ride in each snowcat?
The guest groups are normally 12 skiers or snowboarders per snowcat, with a guide, tail guide and driver supporting each group. The overall winter ski program accommodates 36 guests.
How much vertical and how many runs can I ski in a day?
A typical day brings around 15 runs and 20,000+ vertical feet, depending on your group and conditions. Ski starts reach roughly 7,000 feet; the lodge is at 4,600 feet. Those elevations do not describe one continuous run.
How much snow does Island Lake receive?
The published long-term average is approximately 45 feet of snowfall annually. An average describes the mountain’s climate, not the snow you will encounter on a particular tour.
Ability, pace & safety
Do I need to be an expert to go cat skiing?
You should be a strong intermediate skier or rider or better, with confident control in powder and varied snow and fitness for consecutive full days. Discuss your ability with reservations before booking.
Is cat skiing suitable for beginners?

Can snowboarders come to Island Lake?
Yes. Snowboarders need the same strong intermediate ability, control in variable snow, and fitness for full days.
What if I feel tired or uncomfortable during the day?
Tell your guide. You can sit out a run in the snowcat or arrange a return to the lodge. Any ski-out along a road must be agreed with your guide; never leave the group or choose an independent route.
Do I have to ski every run?
No. Taking a break is part of managing your day. Let the guiding team know how you feel so they can help arrange a rest or a return to the lodge.
What safety training happens before cat skiing?
The first morning includes mandatory equipment instruction and avalanche and tree-well rescue training. Guests carry a radio, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, and must follow the guides’ instructions throughout the tour.
What qualifications do the guides have?
Guides are certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) and/or Canadian Ski Guide Association (CSGA). Tail guides have advanced first aid and at least Canadian Avalanche Association Level One Operations certification. Island Lake is an accredited HeliCat Canada member; HeliCat sets the operating standards.
How does Island Lake assess avalanche conditions?
The team combines weather observations, field information, snow-stability assessment and shared InfoEx information. A snow-safety team assesses terrain, and qualified personnel use explosives as part of the avalanche-control program. Terrain choices remain conservative and can change during the day.
Is backcountry skiing risk-free at Island Lake?
No. Cat Skiing takes place in wild mountain terrain and includes risks such as avalanches and tree wells. Professional guiding and safety procedures manage risk but cannot eliminate it. Read the winter risk information and waiver before participating.
Can I ski the mountain without an Island Lake guide?
The guest cat skiing program is guided. A terrain map or trail marker is not permission to enter independently. Contact the lodge about any separate backcountry access arrangements and follow the applicable access policy.
Planning, equipment & travel
What is included in a cat skiing package?
The published guided skiing package includes accommodation, meals, guided skiing or riding, and use of powder skis or a snowboard. Safety equipment is provided. Airport transport, gratuities, spa treatments and other extras should be confirmed with reservations.
How much does cat skiing at Island Lake cost?
Ask reservations for a quote for your tour, dates and lodge. Packages are priced in Canadian dollars, and applicable taxes and extras should be confirmed in your booking. This site does not display a live price or availability feed.
When is the best time to go cat skiing?
Island Lake’s winter information describes conditions from December through March. Earlier winter can bring cold, light snow with terrain access building through the season; later winter brings longer days and potentially more spring-like conditions. Snow and terrain vary, so choose dates with reservations rather than relying on a powder guarantee.
Should I bring my own ski or snowboard boots?
Yes. Bring well-fitting ski or snowboard boots; the lodge does not provide boots. Powder skis, snowboards and ski poles are available as part of the published package, subject to equipment-use terms.
What should I pack for a cat skiing trip?
Bring ski or snowboard boots, warm layers, helmet, goggles, gloves, a small day pack, sunscreen and a camera. Pack snow boots, comfortable lodge clothing, slippers and swimwear for your time off the mountain. Follow the pre-arrival instructions for your tour.
Which airport is closest to Island Lake?
Cranbrook is the closest commonly used airport. Calgary and Kalispell, Montana, are other options. Allow extra time for winter roads and possible delays; travel from Kalispell also involves crossing the international border.
How do I reach the lodge in winter?
Guests normally meet at the lower parking area for a snowcat transfer at 5 pm on the evening before the first ski day. The lodge recommends arriving in the region a day ahead. Follow your reservation’s exact meeting instructions and tell the team promptly if delayed.
Is airport transportation included?
Airport transportation is not included in the published cat skiing package. Guests can arrange a rental vehicle or ask reservations about coach transport providers. Confirm the route, timing and any border requirements before travelling.
How does rebooking and the winter waitlist work?
The published policy gives returning guests 30 days to rebook the same tour, number of seats and lodge. Released seats are offered to the waitlist. Reservations can explain current availability and requests to change a tour.
Can I bring a drone?
Drone flights require special prior approval from the lodge’s marketing team. The media page explains operator qualifications, registration, flight-plan review and coordination requirements. Do not fly simply because you have submitted a request.
Lodge life, dining & wellness
Where do cat skiing guests stay?
Guests stay in Tamarack, Cedar or Red Eagle Lodge. Tamarack and Cedar each have eight rooms; Red Eagle has ten. Room layouts vary, and the concierge can help select a configuration for your party.
What does a typical winter day look like?
Breakfast begins at 7 am in Tamarack, followed by safety training on your first morning or the morning stretch program on later days. Skiing is generally around 9 am to 4 pm. Afterwards, enjoy the Bear Bar or a booked massage before dinner.
Where do we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Breakfast is served in Tamarack. Lunch travels in the snowcats to keep the group out on the mountain. Dinner is normally at 7 pm on arrival night and 7:30 pm on following nights. Confirm your tour’s schedule with the lodge.
Can dietary requirements be accommodated?
Tell reservations about allergies and dietary requirements well before arrival. The kitchen can discuss suitable arrangements for the set dinner menu and your other meals.
Is there internet at the lodge?
High-speed Starlink internet is available throughout the lodge. The guiding team uses guest radios for safety communication on the mountain.
Can I book a massage after skiing?
Yes. Winter spa appointments are designed for the time between skiing and dinner and require advance booking. Ask specifically about BC-registered massage therapist availability if you need an RMT service or receipt.
Is there a gym or morning stretching program?
Yes. The mountain fitness centre is in Bear Lodge, with cardio, strength and mobility equipment. The published winter schedule offers 20-minute morning stretch classes at 7:15 and 7:45, except on the first morning when guests attend mountain safety training. Confirm the location and schedule for your stay.
Can I bring my own alcohol?
Outside alcohol is not permitted under the lodge’s guest policy. Drinks are available through the licensed bars. Alcohol or drug use is not permitted before or during the active skiing and snowboarding program.
Are photographs included in the trip?
A photographer normally joins your group for one day, with selected photos delivered afterwards. Confirm the photography arrangements for your tour.
Are accessible or pet-friendly rooms available?
Selected accommodations may suit particular access needs or pets in certain seasons. Please discuss your requirements directly before booking so the team can confirm a suitable room and the current policy.
What should I do if I feel unwell before or during my stay?
Contact the lodge before travelling if you are unwell. If you become ill during your stay, tell the front desk or a staff member promptly so the team can explain the next steps and support your group.

Can I book the whole ski operation for my group?
Yes, ask about a buyout of the full 36-guest winter ski program, with the lodge stay arranged around your group. Dates, room allocations, pricing and exclusive-use terms are confirmed with the concierge.
Is Island Lake suitable for a corporate retreat or family reunion?
Yes. Island Lake hosts corporate offsites, family reunions and private retreats, with meeting spaces, dining and mountain activities. Winter groups can share cat skiing days; summer groups can build a stay around trails, the lake and regional adventures.
What is there to do at Island Lake in summer?
Summer visits can include hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, dining and spa appointments. The concierge can also discuss regional fly fishing, rafting and climbing providers. Availability depends on operating dates, weather and the activity provider.

Can we get married beside Island Lake?
Yes. I Dew Point is the lakeside ceremony setting, with mountain views and seating for your guests. The weddings team can discuss seasonal packages, lodge accommodation, capacities and a weather plan.

Island Lake offers mountain weddings near Fernie, British Columbia, with lakeside ceremonies at I Dew Point, timber lodges and hosted meals. The summer wedding experience is arranged as a two-day celebration, with the package and exclusive-use terms confirmed by the weddings team.
How many guests can attend a Fernie wedding at Island Lake?
The published wedding package accommodates 60–100 wedding guests, with 26 guest rooms across Tamarack, Cedar and Red Eagle lodges. Reception capacity and overnight sleeping capacity are different; the coordinator can help with room allocation and your guest count.
Can our wedding guests stay at the venue?
Yes. Island Lake’s wedding experience includes lodge accommodation arrangements for the celebration. Tamarack, Cedar and Red Eagle offer different room layouts. Discuss your guest list, arrival plans and accommodation needs with the wedding coordinator.
Does a summer private event close all of the trails?
No. Booked lodges and facilities can be reserved for your group, but public hiking and biking trails remain accessible. Confirm road access and exclusive-use terms with your coordinator.
How do summer day visits work?
Summer opening days, private functions and seasonal closures affect road access, dining, spa appointments and other services. Contact the lodge before visiting and come prepared for the activity you are planning.
